TNF India - East organised a day-long session on sharing Business Analytics – one of the key focus areas in the region. The theme of the session, which was held on January 13, 2016, at the Taj Bengal, Kolkata, was ‘Business Decision Making – An Analytical Approach’. The objective of this session was to enable Tata companies to share good practices on the subject and deliberate on challenges faced in their respective organisations. More than 60 Tata employees attended the session, representing 22 Tata companies.

From TNF India - East, Mr. Sanjiv Paul, MD, Tata Metaliks Limited, was the host of the event, supported by a core working team which comprised Mr. Rahul P Sahai (Tata Metaliks), Ms. Munmun Pal (Tata Metaliks), Mr. Niranjan Rout (Tata Bluescope Steel) and Ms. R Santoshi (Jamipol). The team was guided and supported by Mr. NK Sharan, VP, TBExG; Mr. Mukesh Prasad, Convener, TNF India - East and Mr. Subhrajit Basu, TBExG Coordinator for TNF India - East.
During the opening address, Mr. Paul expressed that the session was an opportunity for colleagues across companies to learn from each other and take steps to strengthen Business Analytics. The first half of the session consisted of presentations from six Tata companies, including Tata Steel, Tata Metaliks, Indian Hotels, mjunction, TML Drivelines and Tata Technologies.
Mr. Pankaj Kumar, Head TQM, Tata Steel, presented first, highlighting how analytics capability can be a differentiator for Tata companies. He also gave the systems perspective of Business Analytics and the different levels of maturity. Up next was Mr. Rahul P Sahai, Chief (BE & Safety), Tata Metaliks, who shared his experience on how the company solved the problem of low sinter bed permeability through a regression derived model.
Mr. Manu Sharma, General Manager - The Gateway Hotel, was the representative from Indian Hotels, who took the stage to share how structured and unstructured sources of data through multiple tools helped the organisation derive insight into the customer experience. Mr. Amit Khan, Chief Information Officer, mjunction, then took the group through how the company is able to effectively utilise data from own and partner companies to arrive at optimum pricing. It is also designing its loyalty programs using such insights.
Mr. SN Fernando, AGM (New Product Introduction) and Mr. Mukesh Khokle, DM (Quality Assurance), both from TML Drivelines, then made a presentation to share how the company tracks complaints and assimilates data from a huge number of dealer and service network touch points. The pattern helps identify issues like abuse of vehicles and opportunities in enhancing design. The first half of the session ended with a presentation from Mr. Indranil Nag, Project Manager (Enterprise Solutions), Tata Technologies. He shared information on platforms available for Business Analytics and how Tata Technologies is helping its customers in analytics, modelling and data visualisation in an array of industry domains.
The second half of the session consisted of speakers from within and outside the Tata group, which brought an interesting aspect of the subject to light. Mr. K Rajamani, Group Lead – Aftersales Analytics, Tata Motors, stressed on the power of business analytics, throwing light on how the company has progressed in the DELTA maturity model of analytics in the areas of Sales and Service.
The next presenter was Prof. Pulak Ghosh from IIM Bengaluru, who specialises in Quantitative Methods & Information Systems. He shared his perspective on the use of big data in the social sector. The last presentation of the day was made by Mr. Gautam Banerjee, MD, Business Brio, a Kolkata-based company that specialises in Analytics and Modelling. He elaborated on successful case studies ranging from fraud detection in insurance claims to mining equipment life enhancements and multiple other organisational focus areas including HR and marketing.
The programme came to a close with a vote of thanks by Mr. Prasad. The session was very well received by all the participants, and provided them with an opportunity to discuss Business Analytics as well as interact with peers from other Tata companies.
